Do I need to take a break after multiple IUIs?
This is one of the most common questions I read from support forums of hopeful moms. The answer to this question is very subjective. It really depends on how we view things and our priorities.
However, for me, there are more benefits of taking a break than not taking a break, especially for our overall health.
Before we get into that, let me tell you about how I decided to take a break after multiple IUIs.
As with the other IUIs that we had, we were more hopeful on this third one. I had all the symptoms, abdominal cramps, breast tenderness, back pain, fatigue and increased appetite.
But I know it can be deceiving because these symptoms can be from the progesterone hormone as well. Nevertheless, I needed to stay positive, so I claimed these symptoms as pregnancy symptoms.
Then in the morning before the beta HCG test, I woke up early to go to the bathroom then I saw the most heartbreaking thing again, my monthly period. I didn’t shed a tear, I just quietly went back to bed where my husband was waiting.
He asked what was wrong. I think it was, even more, heartbreaking telling him I am not pregnant than discovering my monthly period.
But being the good husband that he already is, he held me close to him and whispered, “It’s ok, we will try again.”
However, having gone through three back-to-back IUIs has taken its toll on me. And I think it will break me if I go again for another one immediately.
I looked at him and said, “I need to take a break.” He didn’t ask me why, he just said, “Ok, we will try again when you are ready.” And I love him even more for that.
There are pros and cons of taking a break after successive IUIs. One of the cons is that you might miss your chance. The month that you decided to take a break might be the successful cycle or the perfect timing. But who knows, life is never certain.
On the other hand, there are benefits of needing to take a break after multiple IUIs, and it can be emotional, financial and physical.
So, why do you need to take a break after multiple IUIs?
Your Body Needs to Recover
The process of fertility treatment can be physically invasive, from the blood draw, ultrasound, and trigger shots. But our body has the amazing ability, to heal itself. However, it can only take so much. It also needs time to recover.
Fertility treatment causes a lot of stress which affects us behaviorally, emotionally and physically. Sequentially, continued or chronic stress decreases the immune system which causes the reduction of the body’s ability to heal itself. Mayo Clinic discusses the effects of stress on the body here.
Your Emotion Needs a Break
Going through fertility treatment causes a rollercoaster of emotions. The anxiety, hope, depression definitely plays games with our emotions. Eventually, it will affect our day to day functioning.
When we are pushed to the limits of our emotional resilience, it can lead to an emotional breakdown.
Even with just a short break from all these will enable our emotion to be re-energized and ready to tackle any job again.
Your Body Needs a Jump Start
Since we started fertility treatments, I was always feeling fatigued, overly stressed and overwhelmed. Even though I am getting my 8 hours of sleep, I still wake up tired.
Our feelings are our body’s way of telling us what we need. If we ignore it, then it can lead to more problems. So, it is important to be in tuned with your body.
During my break, I will be taking this time to revisit my health and fitness goals. I will take the chance to rebalance my body and find new ways to give my body a jump start. Number one on my list is to have a vacation to relax and meditate.
Your Pocket Needs a Break
Fertility treatments are not cheap, especially if your health insurance does not cover any of it. Our insurance covers most of it, but our deductible is still costly. The fruits of our extra efforts from last year all went to paying the deductible, copays and other fees which were not covered.
Taking a break will enable us to save more and budget better. And also, it will allow us to use our earnings in a different way.
Your Marriage Needs a Boost
The stress of fertility treatment can dull marital relationship. It is because your focus is not on your partner, it is on the goal which is to make a baby. Everything the couple does is geared towards making a baby.
Taking a break will enable a couple to focus on each other and enjoying each other’s company without worrying. The break will boost the couple’s intimacy.
All of us have different situations in life, and some of these reasons might not apply to you. However, I am positive that at least one of them applies to you because we have only one goal which is to realize our dream of becoming a mother.
These are the reasons why I am taking a break after three consecutive IUIs. I believe and feel that my body desperately needed it.
My goal is to improve my physical health, emotional health, and mental health. I will clear my mind, de-stress and relax to have a better emotional health. I will re-evaluate my lifestyle, diet, fitness routines and activities.
It is not a guarantee for a successful fertility treatment but it will definitely re-energize my body, my emotion, and my relationship, not only to my husband but the people around me as well. It will enable me to have a more positive outlook when I start fertility treatment again.
