The goal when trying to conceive is to create a welcoming womb. You can achieve a welcoming womb through nutrition, exercise, and even meditation.

Whatever you decide to focus on to increase your fertility, make sure to have a plan. Some fertility coach even recommends having at least four months preparation to get pregnant. In this way, your body is cleansed and ready for pregnancy.

Things to Avoid When Trying to Get Pregnant

  1. Alcohol

Alcohol, as we all know, is not good when you are pregnant. However, it is also not good when you are trying to get pregnant. According to CDC, there is no safe amount of alcohol while pregnant or while trying to get pregnant. As you might already know the devastating effects of alcohol on a developing fetus, you do not want to risk it.

  2. Cigarette

Smoking is generally dangerous to your health, how much more to your baby? According to CDC, smoking can cause preterm birth, congenital disabilities, and stillbirth. If you are a smoker and planning to get pregnant, you should consider trying hard to quit smoking. If not for you then for your baby at least. Also, stay away from smokers, because passive smoking is as good as smoking.

  3. House Paint

Do not decorate your house when you already decided to try to get pregnant. I know it is exciting to start decorating the nursery, but you do not want to risk it. Might as well hire someone instead. According to American Pregnancy Association, house paint contains toxic chemicals like lead or mercury which can cause physical and mental defects.

  4. Plastic Water Bottles

Plastic water bottles are always convenient. However, if we do not pay attention to them, they can be our enemy.

Plastic water bottles contain BPA(bisphenol A) which are toxic to women who are trying to get pregnant or are already pregnant. Studies show that BPA can reduce egg quality in women.

There are several types of plastic, and some are safer than others. You can identify them by their marks which are usually found at the bottom of the bottle. It is a number inside a triangle. The number to look for is 2, 4 and 5. I would steer away from the other numbers.

  5. Perfume

Who would have thought that in your goal to smell nice for yourself or someone, you are actually hurting yourself? Bummer right.

Phthalates are found to be another cause of infertility. Fragrances contain the chemical Phthalates, which makes the smell last longer. You can find this chemical in vinyl floorings, toys, lotions, and shampoos. It is pretty much all around us.

What you need to know about Phthalates can be found here.

  6. Anti-Aging Creams

Again this is a bummer. Who doesn’t hate fine lines and wrinkles? Everyone especially women are disgusted with fine lines and wrinkles and would do anything do keep them at bay. And one of the cheapest ways to do this is to use anti-aging creams.

But then if you are trying to get pregnant, you might have to get used to those lines and wrinkles.

Anti-aging creams contain the chemicals retinoids or retinol. These compounds help boost collagen and decrease fine lines. However, studies show that these chemicals are reported to cause birth defects.

  7. Nail Polish

Yup, painting your nails can be dangerous to your unborn baby as well. Nail polish contains chemicals that can cause cancer and other reproductive health problems.

  8. Soap

Soaps contain the chemical Paraben, which can mimic estrogen. And estrogen is quickly absorbed by the body. Because of this, Parabens can easily enter the body and mess up with our hormonal balance.

However, some shampoos, conditioners, soaps and scrubs are manufactured paraben free. So make sure you pay attention to the ingredients when you are shopping for your home supplies.

  9. Cleaning Supplies

In our efforts to keep our house clean, we are compromising our reproductive health as well. Studies show that some of the most commonly used household cleaning brands contain ingredients that affect fertility.

  10. Caffeine

Studies show that caffeine not only affect pregnancy but it also impacts women who are trying to get pregnant. Experts say that one to two cups of coffee is fine since consumption of more than two cups has been linked to miscarriage.

These are some of the things to avoid when trying to get pregnant. Also, hair dyes, pesticides, nonstick pans, hotdogs, and lunchmeats are also included in the list.

In this day and age, more and more women are found to have struggled or still struggling with infertility. Even the younger healthy populations are not excluded in this statistics.

We can blame this on the environment we are living in. So many toxins are around us, in the food we eat, in the water we drink and even in the air we breathe. Sadly, there is only so much we can do.

So when trying to conceive, we do not want to take the risk. We should try to avoid these things when we are trying to get pregnant as much as possible.

It is always better to be safe than sorry. We should try to do everything we can to achieve a healthier pregnancy and birth.

Any other things to avoid when trying to get pregnant you can add to the list? What are some things you are working to avoid?

Any thoughts?
