There are a lot of reasons why you need to be a dog owner and add a new member to your family. But before we go into that, let me tell you about our journey on how we got to adopting a puppy.

My motherhood journey started way before we even started trying to get pregnant. It started when we decided to adopt a dog or puppy back then. I grew up with dogs, and I always wanted to get a puppy, but since my husband never had a dog in his life, he was hesitant. It took me a while to convince him to say yes.
The moment he said yes, I started searching the internet for a reliable breeder. Since my husband never had a dog, it is just fair to adopt a puppy from a breeder. I know it is not good because there are a lot of dogs out there who needed home. However, I do not want to traumatize my husband, especially when I am planning to have more than one dog down the road. I promise we will get our second one from a shelter.
It took me two days to find the breeder whom I think was a good one. I started contacting her to set up a visit. Before the week ended, we were on our way to the breeder’s ranch. While in the car, I couldn’t contain my excitement, I started brainstorming for dog’s names.
The moment we arrived and was escorted to have a seat, this little furry thing came up and cuddled beside me with his eyes staring at me as if telling me “Take me! Take me!”.
Five puppies were belonging to the litter, but this little one just stayed beside us for the longest time. I think this puppy chose us. I fell in love right there and then.
The owner wanted us to interact with all of the puppies to be able to find the right one for us. However, I think this little guy already made the decision for us.
So without further ado, we decided to adopt him. We signed the papers, handed the payment, bundled him up and took him to a car. Yay, we got a brand new puppy! Officially a dog owner.
The names I came up with before getting the puppy do not seem to fit him. But the moment I glanced at him closely, I knew what his name would be. I named him Mojo. Yes, Mojo Jojo from Powerpuff Girls!
I didn’t know the meaning of Mojo back then. It just felt right to give him that name I just discovered later on that it means “a charm,” which I think was very appropriate because he is indeed a charm.
He changed our lives instantly. As I have said, I grew up with dogs, but my husband didn’t so this whole thing is new to him.
Having a dog brings a lot of happiness into a household, and this is one reason why I would never regret adopting Mojo. He made us feel like we are Family.
So what are the reasons why you need to adopt a dog, too?
As you all know, we have struggled trying to get pregnant. Going through this causes frustration and even depression. But believe it or not, Mojo is helping me get through this.
When I am sad, he sits and stays beside me. When I am crying, he licks my hand. He makes me feel better and happier.
Interacting with your dog increases the hormone oxytocin, a stress-relieving hormone. It also reduces the stress hormone which is cortisol.
Having two part-time jobs which are both stressful, my cortisol level must high up in the ceiling. I come home tired and stressed. Playing with Mojo and teaching him new tricks help me feel more relaxed and less stressed.
Provides Social Support
You might think that being dog owner will prevent you from socializing more. However, having a dog actually improves your social life.
Before we got Mojo, I don’t even know my neighbors. But now that Mojo is around, I get to interact more with them.
Dogs motivate owners to exercise. I admit I do not like working out, or I am not motivated enough to do so. I always thought that my job requires enough physical exertion that I do not need to work out extra.
But with Mojo around and being left alone in the house for the entire day, I feel sorry not to take him for a walk.
Provides Unconditional love
With dogs, you can yell at them, get mad at them, but they will still love you. They will still lay beside you and give you kisses. You can look ugly, poor and jobless, and they will still love you. For them, you are the most important person in the whole wide world.
Saves you from Cancer
This is news to me; I never thought a dog would have such an incredible ability. Studies show that dogs can detect cancer. With this ability, they can even save your life.
Being a dog owner has its own perks.
Improves Immune System
Furs from four-legged friends are always thought to be allergens. However, exposure to these allergens can actually build your resistance. Studies show that owning a dog can even improve your immune system.
Improves your Heart
If you worry about the health of your heart, adopt a dog. Studies show that owning a dog protects you from heart disease.
Dog ownership also plays an active role in our blood pressure. It helps lower our blood pressure by relaxing us.
Prepares you for Parenthood
Studies show that owning a dog first before starting a family makes you better for parenthood.
There are more reasons why you should a dog owner, but these are some of the important ones. You might be hesitant at first but speaking from experience, you will love it.
My husband never had a pet before and was hesitant at first, but now, he wouldn’t even think of returning Mojo. Although he is not convinced on getting a second one yet, I will still continue working on it.
How about you? Are you a dog owner?
